David, as best anyone can tell, for some millenia there had been general ongoing migrations from Africa to the rest of the accessible world. As early humans (anything in genus _homo_ is a human) spread to the limits of the habitable earth, they adapted to the climate. some eventually adapted by increasing bone and muscle mass, and eventually adapted so far as to speciate, to become another species which probably could not mate interfertilely with the rest of humanity. These particular humanoids became exceptionally well-adapted to cold climates, and for about 200,000 years were the dominant humanoid on the planet, especially important when a volcano located in the southeast of Africa erupted massively, causing the worst of the Ice Ages and probably driving most of the rest of surviving humanoids out of Africa. Probably the only places that these non-Neandertal humans could survive was along the seacoasts, while the Neandertal thrived inland, particularly in Palestine and northward of the Mediterranean. But with the ending of that glaciation -- though subsequent glaciations occurred, they were far less severe -- non-Neandertal humans' populations rose, and migrations continued. But about 35000 years ago, the climates warmed vastly, and the humans with the warm-climate physiques prospered and the Neandertal declined, and simply aren't to be found anymore. As the ice retreated, a vast number of differing niches emerged from beneath the ice and the new people spread into all of them and often became isolated from the other populations, and a number of recurrent variations within all of humanity tended to be selected-for in the various niche environments. The southern people retained pigment, or developed stronger pigmentation, many of the northern peoples lost pigmentation, etc. But probably more importantly than any genetic differences, people developed cultural differences. Everyone everywhere does complex art, everyone everywhere applies that fine art skill to fabrication of tools, etc. People are people no matter where you go. But I cannot stress this point enough; culture itself is an immense number of layers of lessons-learned, an outlook towards living that certainly has more effects on the lives led within a culture than does any genetic adaptation to niche. For instance, "caucasians" are very well adapted to temperate woodlands. However, deforestation is largely complete in most of the places where "caucasians" are in the majority. There's no advantage to being "white" and in fact the majority of "white" people live in places where they are at genetic risks from being "white". But, as with all of humanity, "white" people have the cultural ability to create comfortable portable environments which shield them from the natural environment. The genetic adaptation to niche is, in the modern world, entirely unimportant. But one cannot overstress that some Cultures -- the final products of the multiple layers of culture, of histories and lessons-learned -- do a better job of what culture is supposed to do, create a comfortable environment insulating us from the natural forces, or from other cultures. You see, various cultures are characterized best by their approaches to organizing to defend themselves against nature and against other cultures. Some would suggest that perhaps the best criteria for defining whether a culture is successful is whether or not that culture is the most organized. But if one takes that too far, if organization becomes undifferentiated from the concept of "top-down control", one gets Fascism whether of the National-Socialist or "Communist" type. But if one is not sufficiently organized, one cannot succeed; even if one has better techniques to insulate from the natural environment, one may be overrun and subsumed within another culture which is better organized to defend/offend than one's own. The US culture is falling into this last category, in my opinion; we are inadequately acculturated toward the goal of self-defense as a culture. In deprecating the cultural aspect of over-organization which leads towards fascism, we are incorrectly also deprecating the cultural aspect of self-defense. That we see this fascist abreaction emerging is not to be seen as surprising. However, I think that you, Dave, and many many others are only seeing that fascist-producing element, and are being extremely foolish when you fail to notice that first and foremost, many of these people one tends to dismiss as fascist are in fact themselves placing community defense first and foremost on their list of priorities, and are simply trying to organize the community to defend itself against an obvious and unquestioned Invasion. That they are trying to organize against Invasion, that is extremely admirable. That many instinctively trend towards the fascist model of self-defense organization, that's deplorable; in some cases, it's despicable. I believe it's possible to have effective self-defense which is not fascist. I think it's a goal we should all keep clearly in mind, that of developing defensive organizations which are not fascistic in nature. But whether fascist or not, if we fail to defend against Invasion, we are as a culture nothing less than doomed, to subsumation and destruction. -- Be kind to your neighbors, even though they be transgenic chimerae.
